As it turns out, MPs are not under party whip on "matters of conscience", so the most prominent racist idiots of the Progress Party have announced that they will vote against changes in reproductive legislation. The protagonist of Assholegate presumably because it was always her schpiel to out-Jesus the Bible thumpers, and two others because ~radical feminism~ and letting single women have easy access to pregancy is an attack on the right's of men.

Yeah, they're... something, all right.

But in a further plot twist we did NOT see coming, now at least one Liberal and one Conservative MP are making noises about going against their party whip; the one almost-commie seat will vote for all changes but against legalising egg donation, but one MP for the agrarians follow her party againts all changes BUT might vote for egg donation.

Backstory: The liberalisation on this legislation has been in the works for a decade and half, but never passed because any majority government depended on either the Christian Democrats (on the right side) or the Agrarians (on the left), who both have it as a hard no. The Conservatives and the Liberals are both supporters of changing said legislation. They are also in a coalition government with the Christian Democrats and - until a few months ago - the Progress Party. But then the Progress Party walked out, the majority government became a minority government, and the opposition saw their chance.

The Christian Democrats are against changing the legislation because it also involve earlier diagnostics that can discover seriously diseases in fetuses so early that abortions are still legal. Egg donation and insemination of single women are part of the package, but of less interest to the Christian Democrats. The babykilling is their main fear.

But as it stands, the government does not have parliament majority, and the Agrarians are too few to save them. The early diagnostics are uncontroversial among all other parties; it will almost certainly pass. Egg donations are a bit iffier, but still likely.

Ironically, the thing the Christian Democrats care about the least might be the only part they'll salvage: Artificial insemination for single women might still not be allowed, depending on how many far-right idiots decide to go against official party policy during voting tomorrow.

And, you know, that's going to suck, just on principle. And speaking personally, it means I'll have to go back to checking prices and speculating about travel days I can take off from work in the case I decide that I want to become a mother, or braving my discomfort with tinder and dating websites, or try to strike a deal with my good-hearted but kind of annoying co-worker who as good as came out to me when we were really drunk at last years Christmas party.

But suck thought it might, I'll at least have the Schadenfreude of knowing that the conservative assholes who have been holding this legislation hostage for years and years will lose, too.

ETA for the sake of history and all: All legislation passed, I can go to the doctor for help with a baby if I so decide. Whee.
