There's this One FMA Fic I've had on backburner for probably a decade at least by now, and it was set on February 14th because reasons and every year I'm all yosh, this is the year I write it and well.

One half of it is Elricest, and even if it didn't happen this year either, I feel some distinct purpose in my tumblr queue's timing of my Mawaru Penguindrum spree from a few weeks back.

Blue and red as in Shoma and Kanba, or as Hikari and Hibari I HATE THIS ANIME AND I HATE YOU IKUHARA AND I HATE THAT IT TOOK ME FIVE YEARS TO NOTICE THIS

and most of all I hate how I'll never ever know if the choice of colour here was an intentional play on Kanba's family devotion, and I don't think it is because IIRC the same colours are at work when Himari is at the library with Sanetoshi

SO SHALL WE INSTEAD DISCUSS WHY HIMARI IS REPRESENTED AS THE COLOUR WHITE ARGH WHY DO I HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THIS

There are things I have watched or read because they're considered classics. There those I got into because I've liked some other work by the same creator. Finally, there are those that somehow made a name for themselves in spite of the seeming absurdity of the concept. Mawara Penguindrum technically goes under all three, but mostly the last one. "Penguindrum", come on.

That said, google tells me that popular reception is mixed. Is it a brilliant work of astounding philosophical depth that conveys its ideas through a veil of symbolism and a visual product unmatched by anything ever, or is it a pretentious narrative turd which tries to mask its clichés and incoherent plot by vomiting colour and J-pop all over the audience?

The internet jury is still out, but I loved it.

More on the anime that changed my life at least a tiny bit because yes, THAT GOOD )
