Let's play AA6: Case 4 - TURNABOUT HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE SIMON BLACKQUILL

So Simon Blackquill Is Still Kind Of A Dick, but let's see if the "prosecutor acting for the defence"-schtick will make up for the fact that THE FUCKERS DEPRIVED US OF APOLLO AND/OR TRUCY which more than likely means that we've got another one-day trial at our hands before it's bloody Phoenix again. I mean, can you imagine a case with Athena as the attorney and Trucy as the assistant? HOW MUCH WOULD WE PAY TO SEE THIS?! The only thing that could be better would be DADDY AND TRUCY TIME, because you know how much the two of them have been together since AA4? Maybe five minutes of gametime, top. On the upside, Blackquill will probably be less boring this way, so come on Capcom, convince me of that.

That said, unless Bitchface does something truly spectacular from here on out, Blackquill is actually smack in the middle of my prosecutorial rating:

3. Adopted German
4. Weabo
5. Geordi LaForge
6. Bitchface

And I gotta admit, I kinda like how he's all "the hell, get Justice back here to do his real job" (a man of my heart!), and his sniping at Bitchface is definitely raising my opinions of him. I mean, dafuq is Bitchface even doing here - Blackquill obviously hasn't got anything better to do, and the eyewitness status and conflict of interest sure as hell didn't stop the court having Apollo, Ema and Klavier sorting out the Machi business. Speaking of, do you know which single thing would look fifty times more believable than "Edgeworth phoned me in from the Himalayas"?

(or Franziska, wouldn't it be more likely that he'd ask his sister than some smarmy asshole whose country is going up in flames? FFS, this could've been avoided simply by swapping the order of case 3 and 4. But preferably by having Klavier or Franziska do the job. Or the kid from AAI2, even, I haven't played the game but I like his hair. Or Robin! This case would've been glorious with Robin even if that'd mean Juniper would tag along, because her schoolmates made Juniper a lot more likeable than Athena did. For all that I complain about her, I so wouldn't mind if they made an entire spinoff series about the Themis gang)

Is Bitchface using Athena's hearing against her to manipulate her into abandoning her client because of the sympathies of the gallery?!

Ema Skye is officially a terrible judge of character and Bitchface is officially a sanctimonious asswipe. Congratulations, Simon Blackquill, it took a game and a half but here I am suddenly REALLY EXCITED to see you. From here on, I can honestly say that I suddenly like Blackquill 300% more than I did at any point during Dual Destinies. A bit because of course he's a gigant weabo and of course he's got the worst friends, but mostly because there is finally someone tearing into Bitchface.

You know what? Disregard all complaints above. This case was obviously just someone's way to get Bitchface taken down a peg and Simon Blackquill is the only character in this franchise who gives few enough shits about manners to do it (well, Franziska probably would too, but I somehow don't think Franziska would go bat for the defence for the sake of her favourite noodle joint).

Uendo is right up there with Wocky and the Themis Friends in terms of my favourite witnesses.

What's with the britishisms? My ESL status keeps me from truly determining how far they took it with Edgeworth, though I'm pretty sure they just wanted to make him sound posh or possibly New Englander, for some reason. But blatant British slang? Simon Blackquill: embarassing weabo and secret anglophile?

OMG not only did Blackquill give Bitchface a stupid nickname, he and I used the same adjective about him, too. Wow. Approval ratings are going up here

I love watching Bitchface's slo-mo necklace rip. And in conclusion: Weird, weird case. It's a one-day wonder, except this hasn't even got a goddamn investigation, just the trial. Were they short on space? Time? You hardly even get to talk to your client! THERE WAS NO EMA right I'll just go ahead and decide that while Bitchface went overseas to be annoying, Ema is sightseeing Narnia with Maya and Rayfa and Ahlbi with Phoenix being the dad it has become his fate to be. I expect lots of pictures.

Back to this trial: it's an obvious case of, err, filler case, but I enjoyed playing it! Of course, this might also be because the previous Narnia case was so goddamn boring early on and the Gramarye trial was such a wasted chance for character development that my expectations were severly lowered for this one. But this case was fun like I can't recall any of the DD cases being fun - like, back to the Wocky Kitaki trial amounts of fun here, even if it's way shorter. And even though the entire premise of this collapses like a card house if you look at it weird. The motive and the motive-behind-the-motive probably didn't seem as utterly petty - from all parties - in Japan as it does to a western audience, but... yeah, that didn't translate well at all. Interestingly, this case is 60% Blackquill vs. Bitchface, and it's really fascinating to see the Athena-Blackquill interplay here. Of course, the Athena-Blackquill interplay happens because they choose this case to adress their ridiculous tendencies regarding the age of the lawyers in this game and I can't decide whether that's... kinda sexist or not? B&B both belittle Athena about being a greenhorn and tell her outright to quit it, though Blackquill of course ends up helping her out instead. While still mocking her for thinking that she could do this without him, and that in combination with the motive-behind-the-motive... yeeeeesh.

As a complete aside: There are a lot of pairings that I don't care for, but can still understand why people like. Like Wrightworth - I'm no fan, but boy howdy do I understand why other people are. But I cannot see Athena/Blackquill. Even LESS so now than after DD, since Blackquill is exactly the same as he was in every trial in that game, just... sympathetic, I guess.
