What Made Me Not Like Fruits Basket A Decade Ago

I read the manga and I didn't see the appeal.


1. The artstyle disagrees with every atom of my body. This is the reason I never read or watched One Piece so to be sure, it counts.

2. I shipped her with the wrong boy

3. Let me elaborate: I'm 120% done with romances about the self-sacrificing heroine getting together with the rude, angsty ones because some variety of oh my god she's the only one who can understand his painnnn. Gravitation doesn't count, Shuichi repeatedly didn't put up with Yuki's shit and dumped him for it like twice. And Yuki Eiri, at any rate, is funny. The few examples of the shoujo asshats I can name in my prejudice mostly aren't, and the Cat Boy In Furuba was no exception from what I remember. Girls should get to be with the nice boys. Yuki was nicer than Cat Boy. I shipped the wrong thing, despite my better knowledge.

5. Also: Wasn't there a girl who loved Cat Boy all along? Going into the stupid family business ignorant about it is one thing, but I seem to recall there was a girl who carried those family prejudices all along, and who actively fought against them, and actively got rid of them, because she was in love with the boy. I mean, gee, some would say that's a way bigger act of love than whatever stupid nonsense Tohru was angsting over, but what would I know.

6. CAN WE STOP MAKING STUDENT/TEACHER RELATIONSHIPS THE EPITOME OF ROMANCE ALREADY JAPAN PLEASE I'M BEGGING

7. I'm also pretty sure Yuki was the only character I particularly liked, and that was only because I wanted him to get together with Tohru. In retrospect, I was probably a decade too old for it already a decade ago.

8. Oh, and definitely, definitel the part about who every recurring character had been somehow abused or bullied or lost a parent or five because god forbid anyone has a happy childhood

I should probably focus my reading choices on specific things I want to read, because I recall this one being little more than a collection of ALL THE SHOUJO TROPES. I read it because it's a classic, but I never understood why it got that label in the first place.
