+1 to the dislike of the dub. I think the other aspect of the dubbing choices that were such a problem is that, if memory serves, it came out around the time when we were just starting to see the rot of GamerGate and the toxic culture it supported, so when people got mad about the unnecessary dub line choices they were met with a backlash of "it's supposed to be FUNNY, can't you take a JOKE?" that really embodied that mindset.
That said, I always preferred the history side of the fanworks because otherwise the fic-writing was often indistinguishable from any other yaoi bait series. In my mind, it was like, "you have all of this potential historical stuff to play with and here you're writing another coffeeshop omegaverse meet-cute?" I'm guilty of writing at least one Serious Business History Fic, but the goofy shenanigans were what drew me in to the canon in the first place.
