G: What was your first fandom?

The Pokémon anime, and specifically the Team Rocket-centered parts of it, at ca. 2000-2002. I eventually played the games and got a bit into the Adventures manga, but my main interest was was always the anime and the anime-adjacent manga (the one where Rocketshipping was canon, obviously). I eventually got more and more into the "twerps", and it was the home of the very first pairing that by all accounts was crack but which I found myself taking very seriously because it would be very adorable (ref. adrichat) - thirdwheelshipping AKA nevermetshipping AKA Brock/Tracey.

Yes, I had websites (yes, plural). And I'm old enough to be the original Eevee on both FFN and AO3 - but not DW. But sure enough, the username I ended up with was still very much oldskool Pokémon

One of my closest IRL friends wrote a ton of Pokemon fic and iirc it was also all Team Rocket stuff.

I really did love the first? Pokemon anime. Ran home from college every day to watch it and insisted on going to see the movie in the theatre.

I've never played any of the games, though. Might have to fix that some day?

Pokémon was what made me aware that anime existed, ironically, so my life would've been very different indeed without it. I was fifteen and definitely too old for Saturday morning cartoons, but there was SOMETHING about this one that made me watch, and in a happy combination with our first computer with internt access, well.

I play the games mostly for my sentimental connection with the anime and the love of the world it depicts; I'm not sure they'd be the first games I'd rec anyone, but they're cute and honestly, I very much enjoy how the mostly 2d world lets me embellish the world in my head, rather than taking what the anime gives me (even if I love it)

ETA: Can I ask about your friend's online handle, if you knew it? There's a good chance I might recognise it *g*

They're usually some version of ket_makura, and have been for the nearly twenty years I've known them. So maybe?
